“And Jesus said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh.  What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Matthew 19: 5-6

Today’s Christian daily devotional

Anna breathed in the heady smell of Ethan’s neck.  Even after working hard all day, he always smelled like a delightful mixture of coconut and warm honey.

“Are you, hungry Mr. Fox?  Anna poked him in the side and winked.  She loved the irony of Ethan’s last name.

“You know me well, Miss Anna.” Ethan’s deep laughter bellowed through the small house as he pulled off his heavy work belt.

“Momma, why do you and daddy have different last names?” Ethan Jr. waddled into the kitchen; the spitting image of his handsome father.

“Oh honey.  Go help your daddy put away his work boots.” Anna lovingly patted the little boy’s behind, watching him scurry off to do his favorite chore.

As Anna turned back to the stove, she sighed heavily.  Ethan Jr. was only asking what Anna herself had pondered since the day she found out she was pregnant. Her left hand drifted down to the curve in her belly that once held little Ethan.

She had hoped that Ethan Sr. would have proposed before she gave birth, so that they could be an official family.  But, nine months quickly came and went. Ethan Sr. was a fine father that took to his responsibilities with ease.  But, despite his comfort with fatherhood, he avoided any talk of marriage.

Anna shrunk down in fear.  She thought her needs would drive Ethan away; yet, those needs seemed to leave their mark anyway. They stood as a faint but silent wedge between them.

The marriage covenant is a blessing that even children understand.  It binds the husband and wife together, creating a supernatural bond. A marriage that follows the wisdom of the Bible is always a direct benefit to the family and an indirect benefit to the community as a whole.

The world itself can be a very unstable and insecure place; marriage can provide husbands, wives and children stability and security. God ordained marriage to be a blessing.  Don’t ever run from a blessing.

“Dear Heavenly Father,

I know it says in your word that marriage is a blessing. I have so many fears concerning this.

Please open my eyes to see what I am missing.  Show me the root of why I am so afraid of commitment. Help me to let go of the wrong mind-sets I have about this God-ordained blessing.

I know that you have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

I want to live under the blessings of life, not under the curses.

Lord, lead me into the peace I need to go forward and do your will.

In Jesus’ precious name, bless me to obey whatever you tell my hear to do, Amen.”
